#SayNo to all forms of violence

At this point in my life I am hurt. I am mad. I am angry. I am damn straight pissed at all that is happening in and around South Africa (SA). I say South Africa because I live here and this is my context, but this can be applicable all over the world because for far too long violence has been a part of our daily bread. We witness it, experience it, live with it and worst of all we hide it.

I believe it is time and it has always been time to #SayNo!! to all forms of abuse, violence, hate speech etc. towards each other on the basis of race, sex, gender, culture, religion, nationality, ability or lack of and anything else that just causes harm. It isn’t right. And because of that you do not need a reason at all because No Means No!!

Okay, where I am coming from …

For a long time now, there has been many reports and investigations on women being kidnapped, raped, murdered and left for dead in cold blood. This extends to children as well; not forgetting, although the percentage might be smaller, men experience the same thing too and we cannot ignore that. It is horrific really. I continuously think to myself what goes on in a human’s mind to want to intentionally hurt another human in such a brutal manner? I don’t see any justification, except that they are a psycho. I think it would be an insult to plead ‘insanity’ in any court of law.

Further more in SA, foreigners have been experiencing xenophobic attacks, but I just want to highlight something here that recently opened my eyes. Xenophobia is defined roughly as “hatred towards a foreigner,” meaning that for example a South African would hate any other person coming from an African/European/American/Asian country. So to be more specific in the South African context most of the tension is South Africans against other Africans, so from xenophobia we can specify it as “Afrophobia.” I don’t know, it could be worse, I mean, we are unable to show unity as a continent. I find that so sad, because already as a continent we are marginalised from the rest of the world, yet we fight one another, no sense at all.

I am very scared for myself, my family (I happen to have half foreign siblings), my friends (local and international living in SA) and the future, because nobody can say how long this will go on for and we cannot wait until it is too late. Safety on all levels is a necessity. Looking over our shoulders and walking on eggshells does not count as living life.

To go back to why I am really pissed. I am pissed at people and that does include me. It is frustrating to think about how many times in our lives we have made jokes about some of these serious issues. We brush it off, because we only see it at a distance so it has no effect on us. I am angry at the fact that the times that I am concerned about such matters, sometimes I do not speak loud enough, therefore I am not heard or taken seriously. It hurts to think that at any moment any one of us could be made into a victim and probabilities on survival cannot be measured.

Fortunately or unfortunately I am not a fighter, I am a writer (and occassionally a lover too). If you have every heard the saying “The pen is mightier than the sword (in this case the keyboard)” that is me. This is how I want to make a change. This is my commitment that I am going to stand up for what is right and against violence and I will keep doing so through my writing and on other social media platforms it would be my posts (tweets/retweets etc.) And I will no longer make insensitive jokes or brush off negative comments on the topics mentioned here.
